Training is not mandatory, but it is necessary
Training is not required to carry a handgun in PA. This means the onus is on gun owners to prepare themselves to use their pistol effectively. This does require training. Training that develops the specific skills you need to use your gun in self-defense.
In a real world scenario, it’s highly unlikely you’ll be behind a bench in a lane with all your gear laid out, shooting slow fire, at a predetermined distance, with a predetermined round count. Training indoors, in a booth, while having some real benefits, does constrain your development.
An outdoor range, however, allows for much more effective pistol training. You have the space to practice more complex drills, including moving and shooting and engaging multiple targets at longer distances, free from the confines of narrows lanes, with the ability to move freely in the fresh air. At an outdoor range you’ll experience the impact different conditions — like weather, lighting and terrain — have on your shooting.
